Q: What can I do to keep my eyes healthy?
A: The most important thing you can do is to make sure you get your yearly eye exam. When it comes to the eye, there is not a lot we can do once the damage has occurred so, being proactive to prevent damage or get treatment as soon as possible is paramount.
Aside from your yearly eye exams, there are 3 keys to eye health:
- Sun (UV) Protection – This can ben in the form of sunglasses, UV coatings (such as Crizal lenses) on lenses, or wearing a hat when spending a lot of time in the sun.
- Making sure your diet is filled with green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. Additionally, studies have recently shown that an orange a day can keep macular degeneration away. Carrots, believe ir or not, are NOT directly related to overall eye health.
- Take a good multi-vitamin that contains Lutein and Zeaxanthin, or directly supplement lutein and zeaxanthin. I always say, you usually don’t feel an different when you take a multi-vitamin, and over time, that is the goal.
We only get 1 pair of eyes, let’s keep them healthy!
