Q: Am I a candidate for Lasik?
A: This is one of the most common questions I get asked. There are a variety of things to consider, but I will simplify it to 3 key things:
- Has your prescription stabilized? Depending on how big your prescription is, it may not stabilize until you are 21+ years old.
- How thick is your cornea? The higher your prescription, the thicker your cornea needs to be to handle the surgery.
- Are your eyes healthy? If you suffer from dry eye or ocular surface disease, refractive eye surgery can make this condition worse.
Lastly, it is important to remember that around the age of 40 we all start to slowly lose the ability to see up close. Refractive eye surgery will not fix this and reading glasses or a bifocal may still be needed.
